A simple black and white sketch reveals more depth and heart than many multi-layered, mixed media of the same subject matter ever could, as the artist; Alexander Millar effortlessly evokes a memory that could easily open the emotional floodgates to many of us. This transient snapshot of that most perfect and unconditional of human bonds, between a grandchild and their grandparent transcends every generation, creed and colour with a disarming ease.
In Millar’s eye this representation links grandfather to granddaughter, depicted here sharing an affectionate, moving if fleeting moment in the direct aftermath of what we’re led to perhaps understand to have been a party or generation-spanning family gathering. Hands interlocked in both love and security, the old man peers down, protective, nurturing and appreciative that every passing moment could be his last, whilst the oblivious recipient of his range of emotions is simply concerned as to whether or not she should release her balloon into the wild blue yonder.
