Contemporary artist and habitual humourist, Caroline Shotton poses the age-old question that straddles generations as much as it does breeds. That being, the outset of companionship. Or more potently, the first tentative steps on the path to friendship.
Naturally with this being a Shotton composition, the creatures asking the question of whether or not t’other one will see fit to become its friend is a cow. Or maybe a donkey? For the interviewer and interviewee are never quite determined in this work of original art, and is left very much to the viewer to decide just who’s asking who.
Our money’s on the donkey being the one doing all the running, as judging by his face it feels like a question he should never have asked, while the cow looks perplexed. Or perhaps has trapped wind as a result of all the grass he’s recently chewed.
