With a long-time obsession with the miniature - including a childhood that involved crafting smaller than life scenarios from paper and card – it’s no big (pardon the pun) surprise to learn that (now) acclaimed contemporary sculpture artist, Nic Joly concentrates his efforts on dreaming up and manifesting rather compact/intimate versions of larger, everyday events in the present.
Joly’s brand new Spring 2014 release – entitled ‘Keeping The Spark Alive’ - is a perfectly illustrated point in question. And a slightly rude one at that it would appear, seeing as it is, essentially, a couple in the art/throes of procreation atop an oversized cigarette lighter. Or is it more a case of the risqué couple being the ones with the size issues here? what isn’t up for debate is the form and function of the study, which in this pictorial instance is of the 2D, giclee on paper variety, as opposed to the three-dimensional; and limited to a run of just 95 editions.
