‘Say what you see’ was the popular catchphrase uttered by the presenter of popular ITV game show, the aptly named ‘Catchphrase’ back in the day. If we were to randomly describe what we saw in Xue Wang’s brand new Autumn 2015 canvas on board release we might risk freaking a few people out. Let’s give it a go shall we? ‘A mermaid with Marlene Dietrich’s face’, ‘a cat with a human face’ (not entirely sure who’s), ‘a lampshade’, ‘a comfy armchair’ and ‘a placemat with a carrot design’ (although it could just be some carrots on a plate?). See what we mean? Surreal.
But then the highly collectable and very exciting contemporary figurative artist, Wang is nothing if not fascinating in her illustrative approach and (uber) graphic application; and more specifically the visual translation of exactly what’s going on inside her head and the seemingly bizarre message she wishes to convey. And we love her all the more for it! ‘Tender Mercies’ compositionally marks the critically acclaimed Wang’s most recent foray back into her chosen genre, and this hand-signed limited edition can be snapped up with immediate effect now that it’s been publically launched.
