Initially conceived in gouache in 1975, Salvador Dali conceptualized his ‘Triumphant Elephant’ as a bronze figurine, standing some 53cm high and finished in green patina in 1984, courtesy of the Perseo foundry in Switzerland who brought the acclaimed Surrealist’s two dimensional art work to life during this period.

To anyone who admires Dali’s art, the elephant is steadfastly one of his favoured images, and to the uninitiated represents an iconoclastical symbol of the future, and more normally sits atop mosquito-esque spindly legs, which according to the great artist emphasised the start contrast betwixt robustness and fragility. In his ‘Triumphant Elephant’ sculpture, Dali is more concerned with conveying the balance of the past and present, and accumulative successes as we travel through life.

The animal’s jewelled saddle is indicative of clear wealth and prosperity, whilst the advent of a new era which will usher in this turn of fortunes is illustrated by the flying angel, trumpeting away. In this creative respect, Dali is merely exemplifying every individual’s hope for abundance and good fortune going forward it’s fair to say.
